An Interview with Ted Cook

I’m sitting down today with Ted Cook, an elder protection attorney right here in beautiful San Diego. Ted, thanks for taking the time to chat with me.

What sparked your interest in Elder Protection Law?

You know, I saw firsthand how vulnerable seniors can be. My grandmother was a victim of financial exploitation late in her life and it was heartbreaking. That experience made me realize there’s a real need for lawyers who understand the unique challenges facing older adults.

Can you walk us through the typical process when someone comes to you for help?

  • Initial Client Engagement
  • Case Assessment
  • Protective Actions
  • Legal Proceedings
  • Long-Term Planning
  • Case Resolution & Follow-Up

Let’s dive into “Protective Actions” – what does that involve?

That stage is all about taking immediate steps to safeguard our clients. Depending on the situation, this could mean getting a restraining order against someone who’s threatening them, notifying Adult Protective Services if there’s suspected abuse or neglect, or even pursuing guardianship or conservatorship if the individual lacks capacity to make decisions for themselves.

We might also work to freeze bank accounts if there’s a risk of financial exploitation, revoke power of attorney if it’s being misused, or help them relocate to a safer living environment. The goal is always to stop the harm and protect the elder’s well-being.

“Ted helped me navigate a very difficult situation with my mother who was being taken advantage of financially. He was compassionate, knowledgeable, and truly fought for her rights.” – Maria S., La Jolla

It’s not always easy, you know? There have been times when family members were resistant to intervention, believing the abuser had their loved one’s best interests at heart. I remember one case where a son was actually stealing from his mother, justifying it by saying he was “helping” her manage her finances. It took a lot of patience and tact to convince him that what he was doing was wrong.

“I was so lost when my father became ill and needed help managing his affairs. Ted provided clear guidance and made sure everything was handled properly, giving me peace of mind during a stressful time.” – David L., Point Loma

“Ted is a true advocate for seniors. He’s not afraid to stand up to powerful institutions or individuals who try to take advantage of vulnerable people.” – Susan M., San Diego

If someone reading this feels like they, or an older loved one, might need help, what should they do?

Don’t hesitate. Reach out for a consultation. We can listen to your concerns, assess the situation, and discuss all of your options.
